In 1961, Groucho Marx and Woody Allen met for the first time and embarked on a friendship that would last 16 years. Groucho — the elder of the pair by 45 years — reminded Woody of "a Jewish uncle in my family, a wisecracking Jewish uncle with a sarcastic wit," whilst Woody was, according to Groucho in 1976, "the most important comic talent around."
