Pictures From Ireland is a new photographic print sale in aid of the Irish Network Against Racism and NHS
Something that has been heartening to witness over the past few months is the way in which creative individuals have come together to lend their talents – and their actual work – to raise money for important causes. First, hospitals, NGOs and charities helping people impacted by the coronavirus pandemic; and second, the Black Lives Matter movement and the wider anti-racist fight sparked by the murder of George Floyd in the USA. Photographic print sales have been the most prolific example of this, beginning with Pictures for Elmhurst in America and Photographs for the Trussell Trust here in Britain, which raised an incredible £621,785.
This week, a new photographic print sale launched, this time in Ireland, to raise money for the NHS Charities Together and the Irish Network Against Racism. Featuring 45 photographs spanning portrait, documentary and fashion photography, Pictures From Ireland features work made in the north and south of the island by artists from around the world – from Jacob Lillis and Tom Johnson (lead image), who have shot for AnOther Magazine, to Amelia Troubridge, Andrew Nuding, Lewis Khan, Joshua Gordon, Sophie Green, and Wally Cassidy.
“We saw all the fantastic efforts by Pictures for Elmhurst in the States and Photographs for the Trussell Trust in the UK, and realised that the same kind of format could be applied to Ireland,” says photographer Scott Gallagher, who helped organise the sale. “With more time on our hands than usual and given the current climate of the world today, we thought we’d use the time wisely to gather together a group of international artists making incredible work in Ireland to fundraise for the NHS Charities Together and the Irish Network Against Racism, which works with over 100 anti-racism civil society organisations to highlight and address racism across Ireland.”
