Colour and chaos reign in this experimental fashion film

"In an autumn/winter season where the majority of collections seemed very dower, dark and safe it felt exciting to do something that played with colour," explains Fashion Director Cathy Edwards. A disused psychiatric hospital in Essex where the Victorian interiors had been modified by the NHS from the 50s through to the 80s created a perfect backdrop. "The sets and colour were just as we found them and although the environment felt a little frightening and unfamiliar, the light and colour somehow seemed optimistic. I really wanted to use the idea of split screen in a film where multiple images happen at the same time and where you can juxtapose frames and clash colour. I wanted the overall effect to be one of chaos." Originally inspired by the abstract and colourful vision of experimental filmmakers Malcolm Le Grice and Stan Brakhage, it was Le Grice's film The Berlin Horse that inspired Edwards most: "everyone should watch that film – it’s a masterpiece."
