With only a few weeks left to buy the autumn/winter 2012 collections, or perhaps bag a bargain in the Christmas sales, we thought it wholly appropriate to end this season of Fashion Equations with Mulberry. A brand who delivered three brilliant references in their collection: a tangerine, Lana Del Ray and Where The Wild Things Are.
The British brand has a longstanding history of relationships with iconic modern women, and the American singer-song writer is the latest muse, with a bag dedicated in her honour. The Lana is a structured leather flap bag with a top handle shown in sparkly blue embossed croc and a gold snake print.
The Where The Wild Things Are reference came at an interesting time. Mulberry showed their A/W12 collection in February this year, three months later, in May, just as the collection was being shot, Maurice Sendak, the writer and illustrator of the treasured 1963 children's story passed away. At Mulberry, the inspiration could be found in both the set and the collection. Shaggy, black sheepskin covered benches for the audience and Where The Wild Things Are inflated characters placed either side of the runway served as a clue for what was to come. Mongolian coats, rabbit trimmed hoods, tiger prints and knitted fur gilets were clever interpretations of a story which sees the young character of Max enter a magical jungle land.
And the tangerine? Not a cited reference by designer Emma Hill, but the collection's citrus certainly brought to mind the popular fruit. Glistening pencil skirts, citrus-coloured leather bags, tangerine-coloured leather lace-up boots, narrow orange belts, tangerine wide-legged pants, yellow shearling coats with striking orange zips and pockets. Even the models' blusher had a tangerine tint. Look 22 perfect for the tangerine stalwart - quilted jacket, pattern sweater, lace skirt, bag and boots, all in a mouth-watering shade of orange. Delicious.
