A hologram is a photographic image of an interference pattern that, when suitably illuminated, produces a three-dimensional image. Dating back to 1947, British scientist Dennis Gabor developed the holography theory while working to improve the resolution of an electron microscope. Gabor coined the term hologram from the Greek words holos, meaning "whole," and gramma, meaning "message".

In art, holography has been a popular medium with surrealist Salvador Dalí claiming to have been the first to employ holography artistically. Fascinated by optics and the opportunities of its application for creating volumetric illusion he held his first exhibition of holograms in New York in 1972. (In actual fact his display was however preceded by a holographic art exhibition at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1968 and one at the Finch College gallery in New York in 1970.)

In fashion the most famous implementation of a hologram was in Alexander McQueen’s A/W06 catwalk show. For what has been described as one of catwalk history’s most impressive finales, the legendary designer installed a dazzling state-of-the-art hologram of Kate Moss dressed in an ethereal organza dress, created by filmmaker Baille Walsh (who also created AnOther’s KM3D-1).

The following year Chanel sent the holographic nail lacquer down its 2007 catwalk to great critical acclaim. Dubbed “the nail polish of the year” by the Financial Times, like many of Chanel’s nail polishes (notably Rouge Noir and Jade Le Vernis) it sold out in record time. More recently it was resurrected by Creative Director of Chanel Make-up Peter Phillips in Chanel’s S/S10 space-age couture collection, but is still an extremely rarefied polish.

Here we speak to Giltsoff about her love of anything holographic, what she'd wear it with and her favourite nail colours...

Why did you choose to Love this holographic nail lacquer by Chanel?
I love anything holographic, it always reminds me of a favourite skirt I had aged 14.

What would you wear it with?
Anything from Dolce & Gabbana's S/S12 collection, pasta earrings included.

What are your favourite nail colours and why?
Lime Green is a firm favourite, Revlon "Sassy" or "Beach" is the best with a really glossy top coat.

When you get a manicure what do you normally get done and where do you go?
Haven't had one in a very long time on the basis that the last one I had was awful. But if I was to, it would be at WAH nails – their cosmic nails are amazing and what Sharmadean Read has done is incredible.

What do you think a good pair of manicured talons says about a woman?
Power!

What other Chanel products do you have on your wish list?
These Chanel Feather Heels from S/S09.
