Having spent the whole of January – which felt like the longest and most depressing month ever (see our Happiness Drive) – daydreaming of holidays and trips to far-off and exotic places, it is unsurprising that Dazed & Confused picture editor Lauren Ford’s Orvis 1954 Airstream is this week’s most Loved product on AnOther Loves.

Procured specially for outdoor company Orvis, this unique classic has been meticulously restored to its former glory. Originally used as a hunting and fishing lodge near Goose Lake, Oregan, last year it was transported to Timeless Travel Trailers in Denver, Colorado to undergo a complete artisan rebuild. From the gleaming hand-polished exterior to the natural hickory wood interior, aged oak flooring, genuine leather finishing and snow-capped Rocky Mountain backdrop – it’s what (January) dreams are made of.

The Airstream itself is a brand of luxury recreational vehicle manufactured in Jackson Center, Ohio, USA. The company, which now employs less than 400 people, is the oldest in the industry. The design – easily recognisable with its distinctive rounded aluminium body – originated in the 1930s when it was created by Hawley Bowlus, chief designer of Charles Lindbergh’s aircraft, the “Spirit of St Louis”.

In 1969, after returning from the Moon, the Apollo 11 crew were quarantined in the Mobile Quarantine Facility, a modified airtight Airstream trailer, until it could be determined whether they had brought back lunar pathogens with them. Airstream trailers are also strapped down inside military cargo planes and often used to transport American officials around the world. These trailers feature leather furniture, carpeting, wood panelling, state of the art televisions and DVD players.

Today, on National Stress Down Day, when daydreaming and positive thoughts of holidaying are encouraged whilst at work, we speak to Ford about where she would travel to if she owned this Orvis 1954 Airstream trailer and what her favourite travel destination is…
