Why S/S18 Was an Unlikely Paean to Plastic

With pieces that are far from single-use, this season’s designers instilled humble plastic with a newfound luxury

The Spring/Summer 2018 season was something of a paean to plastic – Lucite, PVC and perspex were found in droves across the collections – though those with environmental concerns would do well to note that these pieces are far from single-use. Instead, plastic was instilled with a newfound luxury, best epitomised by Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, whose impossibly lightweight raincoats, hats and boots, in transparent PVC, were cut with the same delicacy of touch as the house tweed.

Here, a glimpse of the most appealing plastic pieces of the season, presented by Chris Rhodes and Chloe Grace Press – from the outré glamour of a transparent Jimmy Choo mule, studded with gobstopper jewels, to a more practical shopper by Phoebe Philo at Céline, which negates the need to ever spend five pence on a plastic bag again.
