As her scintillating debut album is released, we sit down with Rosie Lowe to find out about the treasure trove of vintage wares which taught her to express herself
"Revival is a vintage shop at the top of a little town called Totnes, in Devon. It's not very big, but it’s absolutely rammed with vintage ball gowns, sequined party dresses, and Victorian corsets; the woman who runs it is a real character and she's collected it all over the years. I never leave without having bought an incredible piece. I think it was Revival, particularly, which taught me that I could express myself through clothing. It was never about high-street fashion or trainers for me; I get excited about one-off pieces because they have somebody else’s story behind them for you to continue – then, maybe one day my daughter will continue it too. I often buy them thinking I'll wear them on stage, but actually when it comes to playing I just want to wear Converse and jeans and to be really comfortable. That is what I do with this shop; I buy incredible pieces, not to wear, but to own." – Rosie Lowe
When we meet, emerging singer-songwriter Rosie Lowe is wearing a sparkling silver dress and a sequined beret she picked up years ago in Revival, a tiny cornucopia of vintage fashion buried deep in her preferred corner of rural England. Lowe’s Devon hometown feels a million miles away from her soulful, sultry brand of undulating electro-pop music, but it is central to her songwriting process, she insists. Lowe has just released her debut album, Control, on Polydor Records – a rich aural landscape, shaped by subtly building harmonies and echoing synth tones.
