Each month, AnOther's editors give their fashion recommendations for the coming month. May's highlights include the Comme de Garçons Shopping Festival, Istancool and a breakfast to celebrate Jack Kerouac.
Comme des Garcons Shopping Festival, 6-9 May
Following the success of Dover Street Market's London Market Market, Comme des Garçons New York are staging their own this week. For four days at the Croatian Church of Saints Cyril & Methodius, archive clothes and accessories from Comme des Garçons collections (how about Rei's S/S97 'lumps and bumps' dresses? Or the trompe-l'œil flesh coloured tulle pieces from A/W09?) will be on sale for 70% off, with stock replenished daily.
Chanel Pop-up shop in Cannes, 7-22 May
A temporary boutique joins the existing Chanel store in Cannes later this week, in preparation for the city's annual film festival (11-22 May). The 300m2 shop's interior is decorated in black and gold, inspired by jewellery from the S/S11 collection and will include a make-up and nail bar, a selection of belted Erès swimwear, looks from S/S11 collection and offer clients a sneak preview of pieces from the Paris-Byzance collection.
Tracy Emin at the Hayward Gallery, opens 18 May
A unique opportunity to encounter one the most prominent British artists and cultural icon Tracey Emin. The exhibition will also feature live performances and an interactive message board displaying correspondence with Emin throughout the run of the show.
A Fry-up with Jack Kerouac, 22 May
The School of Life are hosting a breakfast to celebrate literary iconoclast Jack Kerouac. Taking place at 1950s coffee house The Troubadour cafe in Earls Court, attendees will be encouraged to revisit the travelling spirit of On the Road and explore alternatives to the American Dream, inspired by the King of the Beat generation. Whether it’s a passion for jazz, fascination in Buddhism, or belief in sexual freedom which will ignite the most engaging conversation, time will tell.
Istancool 2011, 27-29 May
After the success of last year's festival, AnOther Magazine is returning to Istanbul for Liberatum's Istancool Festival with Istanbul 74 with a programme of performance, workshops, talks and screenings by leading personalities including Swinton, Michael Stipe, Sam Taylor Wood, Kirsten Dunst, Courtney Love, Milos Forman, Haider Ackerman, Sophie Calle, Ryan McGinley and Dan Colen.
Alexander McQueen - Savage Beauty, runs until 31 July
The Metropolitan Museuam celebrates the late Alexander McQueen's contribution to fashion. Approximately one hundred examples are on view, including signature designs such as the bumster trouser, the kimono jacket, and the Origami frock coat, as well as pieces reflecting the exaggerated silhouettes of the 1860s, 1880s, 1890s, and 1950s that he crafted into contemporary silhouettes transmitting romantic narratives. Andrew Bolton's curation is standout, with carefully considered presentation techniques making full use of the mediums (visuals, audio and motion image) that McQueen was so passionate about.
