“Every night all the men would come around and lay their money down...” from Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves.

Lou Dalton’s inspiration for her S/S11 collection comes from the classic gothic novel Wuthering Heights, author DH Lawrence and Romany Gypsies. All encompass the idea of trapped emotions: Emily Bronte’s only book reveals how restrained love can be destructive, and DH Lawrence reflected upon the dehumanizing effects of society, considered pornographic at the time in his frankness. Meanwhile, the Romany Gypsy culture abides by strict rules; brides must be virgins and care for their husband’s every want and need. The above quote from Dalton comes from the Cher song Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves, also covered by Nirvana. With all the restrictive, iconic references it will be interesting to see the results in Dalton’s collection.
