I Love Hot Dogs – currently featured on AnOther’s Reader – is a film blog curated and written by New York-based designer Shannon Maldonado. The twenty-seven-year-old’s blog, which has been running for around two years, explores the composition of vintage film posters and stills with a thoughtful and unprecedented scrutiny.

Why is I Love Hot Dogs the title of your blog? It doesn’t seem to match up to the subject matter…
I know, I Love Hot Dogs is a random name for a blog about films. I'm not quite sure why I decided to make it the title, but I can say that it is a truthful statement: I do love hot dogs (but grilled only please).

Some of the films you write about are old, rare or quite obscure. Are you a real film buff?
I'm kind of a self-taught film buff since I've loved movies since I was a child. Being a very curious person, I find that one usually leads me down a rabbit hole into other films, directors and stories. I enjoy focusing on films that are older, forgotten or were even dismissed at the time. The researching aspect is probably one of my favourite things about the blog.

Do you watch a large amount of films?
I do watch a lot of films: older ones for my blog and newer ones in theatres. I feel lucky to live in New York because there are amazing films playing every night at BAM, Film Forum and the IFC Center. It's hard to not spend unhealthy amounts of time at these theatres.

Does using stills from specific parts of the film enable you to explore it in a slightly deeper way than a standard review?
I think it does. After seeing a film I always try to remember those little moments: an actor's expression; a sign in the background; a colourful dress; a brilliant set. I like to use the stills to create a little story that compliments the film. As a designer, I find the images very inspiring. I'm also a huge fan of typography and directors' use of colour, so sometimes those are just as important to me as the plot.

You seem to use stills to focus in on parts of films that perhaps aren’t considered ‘pivotal.’ Is that your intention?
Yes, definitely. I love remembering a film that I hated, then thinking back, "There was that one beautiful part," or, "That scene was ridiculous and amazing." I try to find a silver lining in most films (though it’s not always easy). I have a great respect for the director's ideas or intention, even if the execution isn't perfect. The best films are flawed in some way.

What is your favourite post you’ve written?
One of my favourite posts is for They Shoot Horses, Don't They? There's something magical and tragic about this film. Jane Fonda's performance is incredible; so strong yet so vulnerable. It also inspired one of my favourite collections by Alexander McQueen.

What is your favourite still?
One of my favourite stills is from Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?. This image is just beautiful to me: her face filling the frame; her 60s eye makeup; her expression. It’s just perfect.
