“I wanted this collection to be strange, both to me and to the audience,” says Royal Academy of Antwerp graduate Nathalie Fordeyn of her MA show, which focused on dramatic shapes and headpieces. Using a mixture of muted red, blue and cream tones and combining sheer fabrics with chunky knits, Nathalie wanted to defy expectations with her designs, but still feels she can push the boundaries further. This is the motivation behind her next collection.

What were the ideas behind your MA collection?
My main ideas came from modern surrealist paintings, animations and films. I wanted to make garments that would make people wonder how it works.

How would you describe your style to someone who doesn't know your work?
An imaginary world. I would like to think that it’s not a dream, but a real world that exists parallel to our world.

What made you decide to get into fashion? Have you always been interested in it?
I decided I wanted to go into fashion when I was 17. I have always liked design.

Can you take us through your design and construction process?
I wanted to try new shapes, new textures, using materials and technique in a very abstract sense, such as knitted coats, constructive knitwear and distorted printed images.

What is your proudest achievement in your career so far?
Being appreciated by the public.

Who in the industry would you most like to collaborate with?
I am very young and new to the fashion world, so therefore very open to opportunities!

Who are your favourite designers?
I like John Galliano, he gives me a lot of great inspiration, Rei Kawakubo, and I also love Issey Miyake.

What are you referencing for your next collection?
I want to push my surreal ideas further, to simplify them and make them stronger and try to bring something new to the table.

Where do you see yourself in five years' time?
My ultimate dream is having an investor who really believes in me! But in the mean time, I will start interning in fashion houses and go from there.

On the website we have a segment called AnOther Loves. What's one thing you're loving right now?
My vintage Chanel bag from my grandmother.
