In honour of International Women's Day, we remember our favourite words from our favourite AnOther women

Tomorrow marks International Women's Day. Officially created in 1911, it is a celebration of women's political, economic and social achievements across the globe. To mark the occasion, we delved into the AnOther archives to select some of our favourite quotes from our favourite AnOther women; from a heartbreakingly hopeful Marilyn Monroe, to a determined Patti Smith and a refreshingly optimistic Uma Thurman.

1. Marilyn Monroe, AnOther Magazine A/W01
"And are you happy?...Well I am too, and since I’m only 34 and have a few years to go yet, I hope to have time to become better and happier, professionally and in my personal life. That’s my one ambition. Maybe I’ll need a long time, because I’m slow. I don’t want to say that it is the best method, but it’s the only one I know and it gives me the feeling that, in spite of everything, life is not without hope."

"I’d rather make less money and take more risks, try at least to put something into the world that’s worthwhile, that has something to say."

3. Jodie Foster, AnOther Magazine A/W05
"Acting is hard for me- but directing, making decisions is okay. I can handle my own decisions."

4. Patti Smith, AnOther Magazine S/S06
“What I feel is that we who believe, and are not heard, and have no real voice or power, because of our media, have to find each other and unite.”

5. Rei Kawakubo, AnOther Magazine A/W06
"Dress is a way to express one’s personality and I thought it could be liberating to be able to express various sides of one’s character at the same time through clothes. It’s up to each person to be free – how they feel each day, how they feel in general, what kind of person they are, whether they want to dress up or be themselves or experiment with something new."

6. Uma Thurman, AnOther Magazine S/S08
"Feeling old is the mentality of youth… You pass a point and everything starts to feel shockingly new again in a way that is absolutely glorious."

7. Diane von Furstenberg, AnOther Magazine A/W08
"I’ve always liked [Wonder Woman] most out of all the superheroes, because she’s not only beautiful but strong and just. To me, she embodies the power and poise I like to think all women hold within, and I feel especially close to her as we’re namesakes."

8. Kim Gordon, AnOther Magazine S/S09
“The thing about being a female in rock and roll is you feel insulted that people haven’t gotten over it yet.”

“Economic independence as important to a woman as to a man, maybe more important, and I’ve done it on my own, not by inheriting it, not by marrying it, and not on my back, but by using my brain and talent. Individuality is everything. Individuality, and enthusiasm too.”

10. Jeanne Moreau, AnOther Magazine A/W13
“Of course we’re all masculine and feminine. And the more years go by, the more for a woman femininity gives way to virility. I have an authority I have earned over the years.”
