You know it’s officially summer once the Serpentine unveils its seasonal pavilion. This year designed by Jean Nouvel, its unveiling is a bold start to the week. Elsewhere, David Adjaye returns to Japan for an exhibition at Gallery Ma, Brion Gysin is the subject of a major retrospective at The New Museum in NY, Portobello Rocks arrives to save London’s cultural heritage and future, and ACNE opens up its first store in London.

Monday July 12 – Serpentine Pavilion Opening, London

The week begins with a bang as Monday sees the unveiling of the Serpentine Gallery pavilion. Designed by the revered architect Jean Nouvel, the tenth pavilion in the gallery’s history looks very ambitious and features a geometric red streak running along the Serpentine’s lawn.

Tuesday July 13 – OUTPUT by David Adjaye at Gallery Ma, Tokyo

Having spent time in Kyoto as a student, David Adjaye’s architecture work returns to Japan for an exhibition at Gallery Ma in Tokyo. Awarded an OBE in 2007 for services to architecture, Adjaye’s latest offering will definitely be worth a visit.

Wednesday July 14 – Brion Gysin: Dream Machine at The New Museum, New York

Brion Gysin worked across the mediums of painting, poetry, writing and performance art, and worked with David Bowie, Patti Smith and Brian Jones over his epic career. He also collaborated frequently with William Burroughs, pioneering literary developments such as the cut-up technique. This show at The New Museum is the first US retrospective of the seminal artist.

Thursday July 15 – ACNE London Store Opens

Mecca arrives in London for lovers of the Swedish super brand ACNE, as it finally graces the city with its presence in the form of a permanent store on Dover Street.

Saturday July 17 – Portobello Rocks Festival, London

The major arts initiative Portobello Rocks comes with the backing of heavyweights including Big Issue founder John Bird, Kevin Spacey, Richard Curtis and Nick Mason. Aiming to save the cultural heritage of Portobello Road from corporate development, the first event is a festival at The Tabernacle this Saturday, featuring music, theatre and poetry. What better way to round off the week?
