Another Man's creative director Alister Mackie is an innovative aficionado of Instagram. Eschewing the monotony of cats and selfies, he has been pushing the creative possibilities of the site for a while now, experimenting with a range of styles. Last year we were captivated by his rainbow grids, sets of 9 images themed according to colour, and now, in anticipation of the launch of Another Man A/W13, he – with the help of Another Man fashion editor Ellie Grace Cumming and art director Laura Genninger – has created a series of fantasy covers, featuring the most stylish men in music; the frontmen who represent the spirit of the magazine. Using iconic pictures of the likes of Hendrix, Iggy, Mick, Lennon and Cobain, he has not only created some great images – that work on Instagram and beyond – but also provided a visual summation of the kind of attitude that defines Another Man. Here he speaks to AnOther about what inspired the project.
"This project was inspired by a visit to Ronnie Wood's exhibition on Bruton Street. There was a display of Rolling Stones memorabilia where all of the albums were displayed as a tile, together in miniature. They were actually tiny record sleeves as packets of chewing gum.
This made me think of a way to show the kind of guys we aspire to at Another Man. Of the set of pictures, if I had to choose one, it would be Iggy Pop. However it's unlikely that any of these pictures was styled like we see nowadays, and this is why we aspire to these guys as they have such incredible style of their own. The way they look is a constant source of inspiration.
I think it's a fun project to see the covers in miniature like this. All the guys we have chosen have a great attitude, the attitude that we want to portray in Another Man and we plan to continue this project with other guys we love."
