Film Exclusive with Terence Koh

Following a succession of festivals across the world, this year saw Liberatum take place in Hong Kong for a rich and diverse cultural programme. Documenting the event exclusively for AnOther, Italian filmmakers Roberto De Paolis and Carlo Lavagna took time out with Chinese-Canadian artist Terence Koh who debuted a special performance at the 3-day event, inspired by the Chinese city. Alongside their intimate documentary film, here the duo talk candidly about their first impressions of Koh...

"We met Terence first day of festival in the car en route to the opening dinner. He immediately gave us the impression of being the supercool guy he is: very curious, very easy going, very respectful of others. We talked all night and understood he was still working on the idea of the performance. His way of building a performance is very sentimental and irrational, never trying to do the "right thing" but rather going with the flow, and being inspired by his surroundings. His concept for the Liberatum performance was simple: a transexual without identity (representing those that live a fast-paced lifestyle in Hong Kong and not given the time to understand who they really are) leading the viewer out of a shopping mall (a reference to the consumistic and globalised city) into a different world that allows for contemplation about existence and identity.  Terence is a very cool guy, always listening to the one next to him and always trying to stay in contact with the surrounding, whether we were in the middle of the jungle or at a nightclub, aware of the fact that inspiration is hidden everywhere and can come to you from anybody, anytime."

Next week, AnOther will showcase an exclusive interview with leading filmmaker Mike Figgis.
