Alexandra Petsetakis and the Figa Brooch by Alexander Calder

Alexandra Petsetakis is a student at Central Saint Martins studying Fashion Communication and Promotion and is currently in her placement year. She is now assisting at AnOther Magazine and regularly contributes to Ozon Magazine in Greece.

Why did you choose the brooch?
I went to a Calder exhibition in Paris over the summer and was charmed by his twisted circus and portrait caricatures. A figa is a Brazilian good luck charm: a hand with one finger over the thumb that will only work when received as a gift. The brooch is a timeless interpretation of the South American charm.

What's the last thing you bought?
Ribbed silk brown and grey socks from the men's department at Liberty's. Men's socks are always better than women's.

What's your most treasured possession?
An old photograph taken of my grandmother when she was three years old, dressed as if for carnival as a jester in a silk turban with pearl and feather. It was at a time when photographs with children were staged and they would have these terrified looks on their faces.

What's your favourite online shop?
Occhi – a gallery concept store in the old city back home in Athens. It holds great multi-functional jewelry pieces and leather goods by Vlieger and Vandam.
