We explore Tuscany’s marble formations through the dreamy work of photographer Frederik Vercruysse

Majestic yet ethereal, marble is a beautiful and mysterious material. From sculpture to architecture, its aesthetic delicacy and wonderful strength have charmed humanity since the dawn of time. In his latest project Tempo Polveroso (Pulverised Time), Belgian photographer Frederik Vercruysse captures the splendour of the noble material with a series of otherworldly photographs of marble quarries and hazy Tuscan sunsets.

Deprived of all human reference, the rural landscapes are altogether dramatic and melancholic, as Vercruysse gets us to reflect on the creation of beauty at nature’s detriment. From marble walls of heroic proportions to powdery rock backdrops and sun-glazed views, Vercruysse’s version of nature is disconnected from its context, creating a dreamlike portrait of the idyllic Italian countryside.

Tempo Polveroso by Frederik Vercruysse is at Graanmarkt 13 until May 30.
