Opening today at Glasgow’s The Modern Institute, some day this will all be crumbling ruins is an in-depth look at the life, times and multisensory work of David Wojnarowicz, a creative visionary whose presence is felt in painting, photography and music today. On display at Carlton Place until 28 August, lesser-seen installation pieces, photographs and archival material tell of his lifelong fascination with ruins, abandoned spaces and political collapse, as well as the queer creative family formed in New York’s Hudson River waterfront piers in the 1980s. Wojnarowicz’s exhibitions were rarely clean or minimal – instead they felt like emotional and political environments filled with maps, found objects, taped texts, animal imagery, fire motifs and references to extinction, sexuality and state violence.
In the latest issue of Another Man, with the help of PPOW, The Fales Library and The Modern Institute, author Olivia Laing curated a selection of known and rarer items created by, or belonging to, Wojnarowicz, some of which are on display in the gallery today. Read the heartstopping profile they wrote about Wojnarowicz, and a selection of quotes from the artist about his innovative approach to creativity and protest.
Some day this will all be crumbling ruins runs as part of the wider Glasgow International Festival, which includes I Only Have Apple Juice, a new group show curated by author John Douglas Millar and artist France-Lise McGurn, taking place at the latter’s home. The show collates work from Vince Aletti, Paul Becker, Phil Collins, Moyra Davey, Peter Hujar, Patrick McAlindon, France-Lise McGurn and Gary Schneider and explores art, expression, nightlife and nefarious lust in relation to big cities, namely New York of the 1970s and Glasgow of the 00s.
Millar, a Scottish writer based in London, is currently working on a biography of Peter Hujar for Fitzcarraldo Editions/Liveright, and in 2025 co-curated the exhibition Peter Hujar: Eyes Open in the Dark at Raven Row in London. He chaired a conversation between Gary Schneider and Vince Aletti last year, at an Another Man-hosted screening of Ira Sachs’ Peter Hujar’s Day at the ICA.
I Only Have Apple Juice by Bonny Don't Live At Home opens at McGurn’s home, The Coach House, 12 Sydenham Lane in Glasgow on Saturday 6 June, 6pm and runs until 21 June. some day this will all be crumbling ruins opens today at The Modern Institute, 48 Carlton Place, Glasgow and runs until 28 August.
