The World in a Coffee

This week's Loves winner is a foamy facsimile of the world floating in an Americano sea, chosen by AnOther contributor, and curator of the putyourpawsup tumblr, Franny Zywicki...

As the UK basks in a miraculous hiatus between rainstorms, one would expect that when thoughts turned to drinks, they would land gratefully upon ice-cold lemonade or a fruit stacked Pimms. Yet Loves is telling a different story, as a blend of caffeine and philosophy takes this week’s top spot for AnOther contributor and curator of the putyourpawsup tumblr, Franny Zywicki. It’s somewhat nonsensical – a foamy facsimile of the world floating in an Americano sea – yet it is an eloquent depiction of that simplest and yet most indulgent of pleasures, sitting back with a hot drink and dreaming of the places you’d go.

In the pantheon of beverages, coffee brings the energy and focus. Plans and dreams conjured over last night’s whiskey cocktails are sculpted into reality with the brain-clearing assistance of a morning espresso. But it is not simply rocket fuel for the worker bee. Cinema has demonstrated the power of a good cup of coffee – from Harvey Keitel’s caffeine-addicted hitman in Pulp Fiction and Amélie’s use of a spilt café crème to aid her match-making efforts, to David Lynch’s real life obsession with the drink – he has his own brand in the real world – resulting in it frequently cropping up at key moments in his films.

Here we talk to Zywicki about where she enjoys her coffee, "fernweh", and where she’d go if a hot drink could take her anywhere in the world.

Where did you find this image?
I found it on tumblr when I was looking for a good picture of the atlas for my new tattoo...

Why did you choose to love it?
I just thought how perfect. I only have black coffee in the morning – when I do my "thinking" – and so there it is, the world. It's like the photo knows exactly what I dream of when I'm drinking coffee in the morning. I definitely have "fernweh", German for "the ache for distant places".

Where would you hang it if you owned it?
It's definitely a kitchen picture – I'd likely have it inside a see-through glass jar (but a big one) and then put my coffee in behind it – then at least it serves its purpose.

What is your favourite drink?
This is difficult – I LOVE aloe vera juice, but then also Coconut Milk Boba Tea with Tapioca Pearls. But then I also just love tea and coffee – I could never choose between them, it's like choosing between parents. They just both rock for different reasons.

If your coffee could take you anywhere, where would you go, who with and why?
Today my coffee would take me to Ibiza, because I have just watched a music video shot there, and I miss the roads and the smell of the airport and the happy happy memories I have from there. I want to go right now.

What's your favourite form of fantastical transport – magic potion, disapparation, magic carpet, glass elevator…?
Definitely magic potion. Magic carpet would be too cold, disapparation always looks like it hurts, and I feel a glass elevator would work like a printer; it would always break and then I'd be clueless as to how to fix it.

What are you looking forward to about July?
I'm going to Sotogrande with some friends, and I can't wait. We're going to be on Tarifa beach every day, talking in the sun and eating watermelon! And some more good english weather?

What is the last thing you bought?
The last thing i bought was a FroYo with natural yog, caramel biscuit, nuts, granola, strawberries and maple syrup! A WIN.
