For centuries, objects have fascinated artists, from surrealist Marcel Duchamp to contemporaries Fischli & Weiss. Amidst the hullabaloo of fashion week, much of the focus is on the clothes, the accessories, the models, the inspirations and the front row. However, it is the objects lying about backstage that make for the most unusual, thought-provoking visuals. Tools of the trade that often go unnoticed.

Captured by photographers Marie-Amelie Tondu and Piotr Niepsuj, the unusual beauty of such objects is more akin to art fair visuals than backstage at fashion shows. A squidgy pink pin-cushion, a single ladder propped against a white wall, the rind of an orange, eyelash curlers, an arrangement of hair clips – this is spring/summer 2013.
