Letitia Wright Heads to Hawaii in Prada’s Re-Nylon Documentary

Letitia Wright fronts episode two of Prada’s Re-Nylon series, travelling to Hawaii to explore reef restoration and ocean education

Today, Prada’s Re-Nylon series returns with a second documentary, released today and starring Letitia Wright. Created with National Geographic CreativeWorks, the film continues to follow the brand’s Sea Beyond initiative, turning its attention to Hawaii and the fragile ecosystems that surround it.

The first episode, fronted by Benedict Cumberbatch, unfolded along Japan’s Izu Peninsula, where powerful currents sustain a dense marine ecosystem. It introduced Sea Beyond’s focus on education, a programme that has reached more than 35,000 students worldwide since launching in 2019, promoting a deeper understanding of ocean life.

Episode two shifts to the Pacific. Wright travels to the coast of Hawaii, where nearly a quarter of marine species are found nowhere else on Earth, and where the relationship between land, sea and people is closely held. The Hawaiian concept of mālama ʻāina – care for the land and ocean – runs through the film, grounding its approach. Moving between shoreline and seabed, Wright explores the region’s biodiversity alongside Titouan Bernicot, founder of Coral Gardeners, diving beneath the surface to witness reef restoration efforts up close.

The film also brings education into focus. Wright meets Dr Kapono Ciotti of the Pacific American Foundation, a partner of the Hawaii Blue Schools Hui, which connects students to ocean science through place-based learning. The aim is straightforward: to build literacy through direct engagement, encouraging younger generations to understand and protect the environments around them.

The broader context remains unavoidable. Around 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean each year, according to the UN Environment Programme, while less than ten per cent of plastic waste is recycled globally. Materials such as nylon – central to Prada’s project – are long-lasting, often remaining in ecosystems for decades.

Prada’s response sits within that landscape. Since July 2023, one per cent of proceeds from the Prada Re-Nylon for SEA BEYOND collection has supported the initiative’s educational and research programmes.
