ANOTHER MAGAZINE: For this photo series you worked with families – some real, others fictional. How did the thematic inform how you approached the project?
TAKASHI HOMMA: I am interested in the space between reality and fiction.
AM:Family can extend beyond blood relatives to the people we choose to surround ourselves with. How would you define ‘family’ and how do you think it shapes our sense of identity and being?
TH:I do not believe in what is called ‘family’ so much.

AM:Could you name a favourite creative work that touches on notions of family and say a little about how it has inspired you?
TH:Tokyo Story by Yasujirō Ozu. I think you can understand it if you watch the film.
AM:While you were growing up, your family ran a camera shop in Tokyo … What do you remember about the time you spent there?
TH:At that time I was only thinking about becoming a baseball player.

AM:Was the camera central to life at home, and when did you realise that you wanted to work with cameras and become a photographer?
TH:I started photography when I entered university at the age of 19.
AM:Your work often focuses on Tokyo’s suburban districts, its urban centre and the people and things that inhabit the city – stray teenagers, children at play and their domestic objects. What draws you to this environment?
TH:Tokyo is my place.

AM:One of your photo books is titled Tokyo and My Daughter (2006), in which you document your friend’s daughter in a family-album style. Through the images we see this young girl grow. What made you want to do something like this and what do you hope people see?
TH:It is a very important work for me. It’s an exploration between reality and fiction and it fascinates me. But there are no answers. That’s why I keep exploring.
