This week on Where It’s At, Jefferson Hack is joined by The Cut’s legendary fashion critic-at-large

Cathy Horyn has never been afraid to speak her mind. Often described as the most feared and fearsome critic in fashion, she’s also known as one of the most respected by designers and readers alike. Her knowledge of fashion history is truly encyclopaedic.

In a candid conversation with podcast host Jefferson Hack, Horyn unpeels the layers of an incredible career – from her time as chief fashion critic at the New York Times to her current role as fashion critic-at-large at New York Magazine’s The Cut.

It’s a career which has not been without controversy – she was banned from Armani shows, she publicly clashed with Oscar de la Renta, but perhaps one of her more famous spats was with Hedi Slimane during his time at Saint Laurent. Here, we unveil her side of the story. There was a moment for potential reconciliation, she tells Jefferson, only to be scuppered by the pandemic’s unprecedented onset.

Horyn also opens up about the lesser known facets of her life. She single handedly runs a 100-acre flower farm in Madison Country, Virginia. A far cry from her dedicated positioning on fashion’s front row, she relishes in the contrast of her life as a farmer and fashion journalist.

Season 2 of Where It’s At is available now on podcast platforms.
