New York brand 3x1 produces all their products in Italy, ensuring the most “comfortable, stylish and resistant” denim with an environmentally friendly practice

Trends come and go, but there are the staples that never tire – perhaps none more so than the classic denim jean. Since 2011, 3x1 has designed women’s jeans that not only update the almost 150-year-old garment, but liberate their wearers with favourable fits and a stylish sensibility. Sourcing from an archive of historical garmentry, 3x1 refers to a rich tapestry of design from the past in order to innovate the fashions of tomorrow – every model is guaranteed to be better than the last in an enduring quest to refine our classics.

Born in New York City, denim designer and entrepreneur Scott Morrison founded 3x1 with a mission to reshape the way we wear denim by producing garments using the highest quality stone-washed canvasses, handmade in the most desirable cuts and fit. Juan Piani, the label’s CEO, attests: “We constantly scout for the best denim canvases and washings, purposefully design our garments to make them comfortable, stylish and resistant, and hand-make all our products in Milan, Italy to make sure that our clients have the best denim to support them with their purposeful lives.”

Pronounced ‘three by one’, the label’s name derives from the right-hand twill standard weaving construction, providing their denims with the sturdiest fabrication and offering a resilience befitting for denim’s enduring fashionability. True to the label’s reputation for re-modernising beloved classics, the new collection for Autumn/Winter 2022 sees previous styles in new shapes, providing a greater comfort and freedom. With the focus on cut and silhouette, the Kat jeans feature a rolled hem to elongate the leg, and the Sabrina jeans come with authentic distressing and rips, speaking to a storied history of wear. Not limited to showcasing the potential of denim, the collection also features elevated basics: a slouchy, oversized jumper named the 80s Nic and a contemporary square neck white vest with an urban yet youthful spirit, perfect for women who want to look and feel their most powerful.

Deeply woven into each denim piece is a story to tell for eternity. 3x1 sources their denims from the Candiani Denim mill in Italy, world-renowned for its quality and emphasis on sustainability. The Candiani Denim PCR Program, powered by Humana People to People, breathes new life into worn denim by placing denim into circular production and promising styles that can last a lifetime – essential work in light of increasingly critical global conditions and the fashion system’s damaging effects on the environment.

Through hard work over the years, Humana People to People Italia has stopped 200 tonnes of clothing from ending up in landfill since 1998. The recycled fabrics come with an innately worn effect, so less processing is required to achieve a vintage wash, which in turn reduces the amount of chemicals and water used in washing, sustaining the label’s promise for a more environmentally friendly practice. The meticulous processes of washing for each style of jeans sometimes requires the addition of natural elements like pumice stone or organic soil in order to scrupulously exact the perfect colouring. The final effect is an authentic style with a conscious story, designing for today and for the future.
