Making It Up As We Go Along is a monthly programme of free talks and workshops, offering young people advice on writing, filmmaking, styling, activism, and social media

This week, Dazed Media is launching Making It Up As We Go Along: a programme of free talks and workshops to help young people break into the creative industries. The digital events will run monthly throughout 2021, and span subjects as diverse as writing, filmmaking, styling, activism, and social media.

Making It Up As We Go Along will kick off on March 25 with “How to Get Your Foot In The Door”. In this opening talk, AnOther’s deputy editor Ted Stansfield will interview Dazed’s newly installed executive editorial director Lynette Nylander about her journey into the fashion industry. As well as discussing her personal experiences at Teen Vogue and CR Fashion Book, she will also share practical advice on networking, creating a strong CV or portfolio, and finding your editorial voice.

There will be more events throughout the year, including a styling workshop with Dazed’s editor-in-chief Ib Kamara; tips on writing for “positive social change” with Dazed’s digital editor Anna Cafolla; and a lesson on social media brand building with the magazine’s senior Instagram editor Vanessa Hsieh and social media editor Marios Mystidis.

In addition to all this, the AnOther team – including Stansfield, fashion features director Alexander Fury, fashion director Ellie Grace Cumming, editor Sophie Bew, and managing editor Hannah Lack – will be holding a portfolio review day for fledging fashion designers (following the success of last year’s editions). There will also be a Dazed Media workshop on creating “stand-out events”, as well as a Nowness-hosted guide to getting your film commissioned.

Making It Up As We Go Along is part of Dazed Academy, an educational initiative launched in 2019 to “empower, inspire and educate” young people from all over the world. “At a time where people have been stuck at home, schools closed and education put on hold, Making It Up As We Go Along aims to empower the future of young people from all over the world and give them the tools and the confidence to carve out their own path into the creative industries,” explains Nylander in a statement. “We want this event series to be a place for equal opportunity and exchange and break down the barriers between our audience and the magazine, passing on Dazed’s 30 years of knowledge and expertise.”
