Yesterday evening, the fashion world gathered in Paris to celebrate the life and legacy of Karl Lagerfeld, who passed away this February. Hosted by the houses he lent his immeasurable talents to – Chanel, Fendi, and his eponymous label – the Grand Palais, where Lagerfeld held his spectacular shows for Chanel each season, was lined with floor-to-ceiling photographs taken across the designer’s lifetime. Actresses Tilda Swinton, Fanny Ardant, Cara Delevingne and Helen Mirren, all friends of Lagerfeld, read pieces by his favourite authors (he was famously an avid collector of books, both fiction and non-fiction) including Virginia Woolf, Colette and Edith Sitwell. Other tributes came from violinist Charlie Siem, Jookin dancer Lil Buck, Pharrell Williams and others.

The celebration – fittingly titled Karl For Ever, and designed, directed and staged by Robert Carsen drew focus not only on his great loves, music and literature among them, but his enduring and vast influence on fashion. “Lagerfeld was indeed the fashion designer, redefining the term for contemporary times with boundless creativity, fierce intellect, humour, and above all protean talent,” wrote AnOther’s fashion features director Alexander Fury on his passing. “Lagerfeld’s style cannot be easily summarised – it moved with the moment, ever-reinvented, ever-renewing, like fashion itself.” The celebration attested to this, paying tribute to Lagerfeld’s unique standing – and subsequent legacy.

Here, to join the celebration of Lagerfeld’s life, the designer’s work – across houses Chanel and Fendi – as they appeared in the pages of AnOther Magazine, through the years.
