Session Kit is the home of fashion-led hairstyling essentials. Founded by Anna Chapman, a London-based session stylist and assistant in Guido Palau’s core team, the online store was born from the frustration of being unable to easily get hold of the best products used backstage for shows and photoshoots. AnOther has enlisted Chapman to produce a series of tutorials, demonstrating how to recreate editorial-worthy hair at home.

In episode one, Anna Chapman, session hairstylist and founder of Session Kit, demonstrated how to create languid, just-out-of-bed waves – the kind of style favoured by an insouciant Kate Moss circa 1992. For more polished occasions, however, we prefer Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s minimalist chignons. Creating a sleek bun can be fiddly – it requires patience to handle pins and elastics, not to mention clouds of noxious hairspray – but as Chapman proves, moulding your hair into a chic up-do becomes much easier when using the correct tools in the proper manner.

“Obviously you do need to know the basic techniques, and the little tips and tricks that session stylists use,” she says. “But one thing a lot of consumers aren’t aware of is that tools are so important, and make styling your own hair so much easier. If you’re doing a little bun or chignon and you’re using really flimsy grips or pins, it’s just going to instantly fall out.” Here, using her selection of tried and tested products, favourited by some of the world’s most revered hairstylists, Chapman takes us through a foolproof routine for emulating a timeless, bun worn at the nape of the neck. Follow her guide for a Jil Sander-esque look in ten easy steps.
