Flash Back: Inside AnOther Magazine's Most Fabled Parties

To celebrate our 15th birthday, we unearth the photographic highlights (and a few hazy memories) from the most magical AnOther parties of all time

So far no amount of research has unearthed photos of one of the legendary parties thrown by AnOther Magazine to celebrate the launch of the second issue. The party took place at the Hôtel du Rond-Point des Champs-Elysées in Paris on 10th March 2002. Enough people were present to witness the extraordinary Michael Clark dance performance to vouch that the party actually did happen, but other details are wonderfully hazy.

Since we held a small dinner party in New York in September 2001 to launch the very first issue of this magazine, the celebration has continued for over fifteen years. The parties have alternated between New York, Paris and London with occasional forays to Milan, Istanbul and Los Angeles. But as much as this moveable feast has travelled, the same members of the magazine’s extended family have often been on hand to toast the publication. Friends have also lent their homes as party venues, as in 2008 when Dustin Yellin threw open the doors to his Red Hook warehouse, where Stephen Petronio’s dancers performed while Mark Ronson DJ’d, or in 2014 when Thomas Hayo welcomed hundreds of AnOther Magazine guests to his iconic Bowery rooftop for a thrilling late night poetry recital from his legendary neighbour, John Giorno.

The formation of each magazine is a kind of performance in itself, one that deftly weaves the contributions of multiple people. The culmination of that performance is the launch party. Long may the tradition continue...
