To celebrate the reprint of Betony Vernon’s titillating tome, The Boudoir Bible, the sex anthropologist and designer exclusively unveils a sensual short lensed by John Maybury
“It is not pornographic. It's sensual, erotic and it leaves a lot to the imagination,” teases the revered sex anthropologist and jewellery designer Betony Vernon of her cult book, The Boudoir Bible: The Uninhibited Sex Guide for Today. First published by Rizzoli in 2013, the beautiful, boundary-pushing tome offers an elegant and uplifting masterclass on niche practices of the new sexual landscape. “The book is for pleasure, yet also helps to understand what we love about the body – it’s a catalyst and invitation to play,” adds Vernon, who elegantly eases the reader through playful, pleasure-inducing chapters on nipple teasing, rope bondage and the stimulation of unexpected erogenous zones.
Now, to celebrate the re-release of this delightful erotic compendium and its global success (most recently, the rights of the book were sold to Taiwan) – Vernon has joined forces with the iconic British filmmaker John Maybury, to create a sultry short. “John proposed the idea of exploring these sexual rituals, of entertaining and provoking play, so we worked together and this is the outcome,” she muses, adding. “We filmed and edited it all in one night, it was very spontaneous – John actually filmed it on his iPhone, which I love! I feel it’s true to my erotic philosophy, sensual, but not pornographic. See for yourself…”
