Jefferson Hack and Ruth Rogers

In the new episode of Where It’s At, Jefferson Hack meets with Ruth Rogers to discuss over 40 years of success at River Cafe

In the latest episode of Where It’s At, Jefferson Hack visits one of London’s great cultural connectors, Ruth Rogers, at her London home. Heading up River Cafe for nearly 40 years, after founding it in 1987 with Rose Gray, and with her star-studded podcast, Ruthie’s Table, Ruth has hosted, hung out with and interviewed some of our time’s most pioneering minds. And, her stories are the stuff of creative lore and culinary legend.

Situated in a riverside edifice in Hammersmith which, like her home, was designed by her late husband, the architect Richard Rogers, River Cafe is at the epicenter of London’s food scene. The Michelin-starred Italian restaurant is known for having trained celebrity chefs from Jamie Oliver to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and being frequented by the stars.

Along with fond memories of celebrity friends and gastronomy, she tells Hack about meeting her husband, how she first learned about food, and the impetus behind River Cafe. She shares the tricks of the trade, unpacking how the female-led, out-of-the-way canteen became the vibrant and informal food landmark it is today.

Season 2 of Where It’s At is available now on podcast platforms.
