On the Rocks sees the filmmaker reunite with the star of her 2003 film Lost in Translation, along with Rashida Jones
The first trailer for the much-anticipated new feature from Sofia Coppola has been released this afternoon, seeing the filmmaker reunite with actor Bill Murray, who starred in her Academy Award-winning 2003 film Lost in Translation.
Written and directed by Coppola, and titled On the Rocks, the film centres on the relationship between “larger-than-life playboy” Felix (played by Murray) and his daughter Laura (played by Rashida Jones). Dubbed as a “generation-clash comedy”, the father-daughter duo come together to trail Laura’s husband (Marlon Wayans) across New York after fears of an affair with his co-worker.
“As the two begin prowling New York at night, careening from uptown parties to downtown hotspots, they discover at the heart of their journey lies their own relationship,” runs the film’s blurb, which also marks the first of a collaborative partnership between film studio A24 and Apple TV+. Coppola previously worked with A24 on 2013 movie The Bling Ring.
Earlier this week Coppola noted that she is a longtime fan of Jones, who also holds a unique link to Lost in Translation. “When I was working on Lost in Translation I was workshopping the script at an acting class, and she played the role that Scarlett Johansson ended up playing,” Coppola told Entertainment Weekly. “I remember first working with her then and always having a connection to her and really liking her.”
On The Rocks will have a theatrical release this October, and will also be available on Apple TV+. Watch the trailer below.
