AnOther Magazine editor Sophie Bew shares her isolation recommendations – from Netflix’s sumptuous new documentary Apollo 11 to a book of English Gardens

We at AnOther believe that in this unprecedented time of isolation, economic uncertainty, and social distancing, culture is more important than ever. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be publishing daily to do lists, curated by the AnOther Magazine and Another Man teams, as they share things to look at, listen to, watch, read, or follow, to get you through.

In an attempt to minimise my news radio exposure and self-soothe, I’ve been playing Brian Eno’s calming Music for Airports and Childish Gambino’s uplifting new album, 3.15.20.

I finally have time to read Carmen Maria Machado’s non-memoir-memoir In the Dream House: A Memoir and I’m thrilled. While it doesn’t promise to be light and happy – it documents an abusive same-sex relationship – if her book of utterly bewitching short stories Her Body and Other Parties is anything to go by, it will be unforgettable and experimental. She’s one of the most exciting voices in literature right now.

Apollo 11 has just landed on Netflix – sorry about the pun – and with it some of the most beautiful film footage of the 1960s I’ve ever seen. With the richness and saturated colour of a William Eggleston photo, the 70mm-shot documentary offers an exquisite snapshot of the era of the moon landing – the most spectacular being of the incredibly dressed crowd that bore witness.

Each night this week I’ve been perusing a recent Rizzoli book called English Gardens: From the Archives of Country Life Magazine. In lieu of being able to visit any gardens other than my own, the dappled light and virulent swathes of blooms captured inside are keeping my sights set on a hopefully brighter summer (and have inspired many a late-night seed order).

I’m loving chef Laila Gohar’s simple recipe recommendations – her approach to food is equal parts monastic and effortless (chicken soup; humble bean dishes), and hits the sweet spot of all my culinary aspirations (as does her airy NYC kitchen). Also, I somehow only just started following gardener and very-nice-man Monty Don on Instagram and the pictures of his garden at Longmeadow, Herefordshire, not to mention his two golden retrievers, are truly a balm for the soul.
