Featuring emerging and established filmmakers and talent, its curatorial expertise and unique programming strategy provokes global inspiration and debate by creating unparalleled storytelling that celebrates the extraordinary of the every day. 

NOWNESS launched a Chinese-language site in 2012 and since 2013 videos are available in up to ten languages including English, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian. In China alone NOWNESS has a monthly audience of 14 million. 

In 2017 Modern Dazed, a new joint venture between China’s leading luxury publisher Modern Media and the UK’s independent powerhouse Dazed Media, acquired a majority stake in NOWNESS.

About the role: Senior Editor, NOWNESS

Reporting to: Editorial Director and Managing Editor

The Senior Editor works closely with Editorial Director to ensure their vision is delivered across the platform, monitoring the day to day commissioning and editorial workflow. They’re involved in devising and curating editorial seasons; the development of series; and responsible for scheduling films throughout the year with a view to maximising audience engagement and reach. They directly oversee the London programming team and work closely with the Head of Social Media.

Role description and deliverables

– Evaluate, curate, acquire and identify appropriate content for digital screening across the NOWNESS Channel (website, socials, video platforms and distribution partners).
– Plan and schedule programming based on seasons, time availability, ratings, past performance and viewer demographics, to maximise viewership.
– Analyse the latest data on audience viewing patterns to pinpoint emerging trends before they’re played out. Analyse past ratings successes and failures to figure out the best time of year to launch a new film or original series.
– Manage and evaluate content through performance tracking, industry knowledge and research in an effort to find the best content to engage the NOWNESS audience.
– Contribute ideas for films/series that NOWNESS could produce.
– Develop relationships with content creators to increase sources for ready-made content.
– Foster content and editorial partnerships.
– Ensure the Editorial Director’s vision is delivered across the commissioning and editorial teams, including to help steer weekly development meetings when required.
– Think strategically and ambitiously about output.
– Input creatively into series development and talent outreach.
– Lead weekly editorial meetings.
– With the Editorial Director, devise and roll-out seasons and other editorial across commissions, acquisitions – align with social media activity.
– Work with editors at large and freelance commissioners to set deliverables for seasons, eps et cetera. 
– Liaise with Chinese editorial team to align output.
– Guide and share best practice with Chinese editorial team
– Manage programming co-ordinator, content editor and video editor, liaise with head of social media.
– Represent NOWNESS externally when required.

Essential knowledge and skills 

– Ability to identify and develop ideas for films, series or seasons.
– Ability to work to stringent digital KPIs and course correct if not hitting targets.
– Good global network of creatives, cultural experts and PRs.
– Experience / understanding of curating films.
– Good team management skills, communication and performance support.
– Strong organisational skills and ability to work to deadlines.
– Understanding of the NOWNESS aesthetic and appreciation for audience
