Whether it be a result of Royal Wedding fever or our fondness of the precious gemstone, the Most Loved product of the week was a Satomi Kawakita 18k pearl ring loved by jewellery buyer and blogger Leigh Batnick on the AnOther Loves stream. Engagement rings may traditionally feature diamonds – look no further than Kate Middleton’s blue 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring – however the women amongst us who are not yet engaged definitely wouldn’t say no to this pearl beauty made from the belly of the tiniest oyster. (Alternatively as its retailer suggests it could also be the perfect Mother’s day gift – US Mother’s day is this Sunday 8th May.)
Famously worn throughout history, pearls have adorned Queen Mary I, Princess Diana, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn and of course Coco Chanel – who was rarely seen without her famous strands. Timeless and delicate, they have repeatedly proven to be the perfect accessory to royalty, Hollywood legends and even political figures – First-Lady Michelle Obama can be frequently seen wearing either Akoya or large white South Sea Pearl necklaces, as well as Secretary of State Hilary Clinton. Here we speak to Batnick to about her enduring love for pearls and what her favourite ring is.
How did you come across this Satomi Kawakita 18k pearl ring?
I am the buyer for Catbird and we carry Satomi's fine, shining jewels at the shop.
Why did you decide to love it?
I love the ring for its play on scale, for being slightly coy and very quiet.
What is the favourite ring you own and why? Who gave it to you?
My St. Kilda Rapture engagement ring, given to me by my husband.
What do you find so special about pearls?
They are mystical little offerings born out of the belly of tiny, crusty, hard-working oysters. Pearls are a reminder that what is on the inside is never, ever known.
Do you own any other pearl products?
I make cross-shaped pearl studs for my own jewellery line, and I often wear a gold, diamond and pearl bracelet from my grandmother. I also have my grandmother's strand of add-a-pearls.
What was the last thing you bought?
A coffee.
What is on your wish list at the moment?
Rose gold ear cuffs.
What is your best online shop?
1stdibs.com
