As India’s Covid cases continue to soar, Art for India is raising money for Mission Oxygen through the sale of photographic prints by some of the country’s leading image-makers
It’s been over a year since the Covid-19 pandemic gripped the world, and as many countries seem to be edging towards some semblance of normality, others are facing the most devastating surges of the virus yet. India – the world’s second most populous nation – is one of the countries currently struggling the most, with the rampant spread of a deadly new variant of the virus bringing its healthcare system to its knees, and a terrifying milestone of 20 million Covid cases surpassed this week.
Moved into action by the crisis, London-based creatives Heta Fell, Vivek Vadoliya, and Danielle Pender have launched Art for India – a week-long print sale raising vital funds for Mission Oxygen, which is a charity importing urgently-needed oxygen concentrators and distributing them to struggling hospitals across India.
The sale features works by several leading image-makers from India, the diaspora and beyond, who have donated some of their “most loved and striking imagery” in aid of the cause – including Bharat Sikka, Prarthna Singh, Kalpesh Lathigra, Avani Rai, Vivek Vadoliya, Kuba Ryniewicz, and Ashish Shah. Each print is priced at £100, and all profits after printing and shipping costs will go directly to supporting the Mission Oxygen appeal.
“As the UK (hopefully) emerges from the worst of its own crisis, seeing the news from India has been devastating and deeply affecting us all – we are grateful to the artists for joining us in this important cause and hopeful that each print sold can make a small but meaningful difference in lessening the tragedy of this situation,” say the team behind Art for India.
