Created during lockdown, Sarah Burton’s latest men’s collection for Alexander McQueen is an exercise in resourcefulness and romance

Alexander McQueen’s new menswear collection is a thing of beauty. Unveiled today, the Spring/Summer 2021 offering closely echoes the house’s parallel womenswear collection, which, revealed last month, saw Sarah Burton weave signature McQueen motifs, such as bows and the garden rose, into an array of elegant silhouettes which referenced the 1950s and 60s.

Like its sister collection, Burton’s Spring/Summer 2021 menswear designs were created during lockdown, crafted out of out-of-stock fabrics which might otherwise have been discarded. Marrying resourcefulness with romance, the collection sees Burton soften traditional menswear silhouettes with feminine flourishes, such as enlarged bows across chests of suit jackets; sparkly embellished finishings, ruffled peplum waists, and dress-like jacket-coat hybrids, which are employed in a mixture of delicate sunset hues and cinematic black and white.

Described by the brand as “an exploration of hybrids”, the collection also fuses elements of traditional dress with contemporary staples, such as a parka spliced with a classic camel overcoat, or a bomber jacket with a morning coat tail. The collection’s accompanying look book images are lensed by Chloé Le Drezen, and capture Burton’s modern day dandies against the backdrop of nature.
