Tout le monde a en tête l’image de l’homme s’opposant aux chars sur la place Tian’anmen en 1989. Mais combien connaissent le nom de l’auteur de ce cliché devenu un symbole ? C’est de ce constat qu’est parti le photographe américain Tim Mantoani, qui sortait aux premiers jours de l’année 2012 un ouvrage non pas en hommage à ces photos historiques, mais plutôt à ceux qui les ont pris. “Il y avait comme un vide” explique Mantoani, “et tous ces photographes n’ont pas reçu assez de crédit“. Galerie de portraits de ces photographes souvent méconnus du public, dont certains sont d’ailleurs décédés durant la réalisation de ce projet, “Behind Photographs” est une sorte de mise en abyme, une reconnaissance du talent de ces hommes qui ont su capter ces instants parfois aussi historiques que fugaces.

Everyone has in mind the image of the man opposed to the tanks in Tiananmen in China in 1989. But how many knows the name of the author of this picture that became a symbol ? It’s from this observation that the American photographer Tim Mantoani presented in the early days of 2012 a book not to honor these historical photos, but to those who made them. “There was a void,” says Mantoani, “and all these photographers were not given enough credit.” Memory and historical recognition to these photographers often unknown by the public, some of which died during this project, “Behind Photographs” is a kind of mise en abyme, a recognition of the talent of these men that were able to capture those as fleeting as historic moments.
