David Lyle: This Ends Here

—by Annals of Americus® | Notes from the Desk of Matthew Newton / Monday, December 19, 2011

"This Ends Here" by David Lyle. Oil on panel, 2010.

Last year I kept seeing this image (pictured) pop up all over Tumblr, but never with any attribution. Somewhere along the line, though I don’t remember when or how, I learned that photographer turned painter David Lyle was responsible. Looking into his background, I discovered that Lyle uses snapshots found at thrift stores, garage sales, and flea markets as source material for his oil paintings; he also prefers photographs from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. Whether this painting is fantasy from Lyle’s mind or based on a real photo plucked from a thrift store bin remains unclear. Hopefully it’s the latter.
