For their Haute Couture Spring Summer 2011 show this evening, Valentino designers Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli showed an ultra-feminine flurry of silk gazar, tulles and crêpe in tiered layers to the knee or ankle – in the softest pastel lemons, blushing pink, icy blue and palest lime.
With filmy butterflies clasped at their necks or stiff silken collars, the Valentino girls were enrobed in the most delicate pleats and floral appliques, with structured bodices that dissolved into flouncing trains and coral-like curlicues of fabric. Several pieces held a more minimal aesthetic in white or cool taupe, with technical details such as laddered inlays over a slimline coat dress, and a triple-layered gazar ruffle across one shoulder. A sparkling snub-toed mary jane lent a swinging Hollywood vibe to the red carpet-ready creations, lifting the demure mood to glamorous heights.
