MASTORI”MOTWARY STUDIO: “SARKA/23 JULY 1677”

—by Alessio Nesi - Propriete Exclusive / Monday, April 12, 2010

Fashion is having an affair with cinematic media, video in particular. After all, clothing only becomes fashion when dresses come to life, when narratives, however loose, materialize, when atmospheres gather around silhouettes. To convey the feelings behind their s/s 2010 collection of clothing and accessories, Filep Motway and Maria Mastory conceived the short film SARKA 23 JULY 1677. In true Greek tragedy spirit, the emotions are rather intense: love, desire, loss, despair, longing.

Deep and dramatic, elliptically suspended in a dreamscape with no immediate temporal connotations – apart from the wigs, sure – SARKA comes across, visually, as James Bidgood meets David Hamilton with a dash of Rainer Werner Fassbinder: dense yet de-saturated colors, blurry atmospheres, eros as a burning subtext. Diane Pernet’s smoky voiceover adds just one more layer of eerie intensity. As a visual experience, SARKA poignantly conveys the struggles of creation and self-expression, merging life and art into a pulsating whole.
