Sheepishly Stylish

—by Advanced Style / Monday, February 15, 2010

This guy reminds me of a sea captain full of character. I love his sweater and hat. We didn't have long to talk because he was on his way to the movies, but it's fun to make up stories and imagine him sailing the high seas.

How to: wear a pantsuit

—by My Mom, The Style Icon / Monday, February 15, 2010

It's a not an easy thing to pull off. there will be unwanted commentary. "Wow! Is that all one piece?" or "Where the hell did you get that thing" or worse "I hope you don't have to go to the bathroom anytime soon."
These inane statements have lept me from wearing the kind of onesie I so desperately crave. But Katja Peglow's spectacular German mom has provided some hope and instruction by example.

1. Keep it loose. A too tight body suit can lead to cameltoe (er, mrs. posh beckham)
2. Stick with earth tones. They downplay the teenager of the future nature of the design. Anything that shines, is fluorescent or made from old swimsuits is to be set on fire --likely by accident-- at once. (er, David Lee Roth)
3. Don't apologize. Make direct eye contact at anyone, even a camera that appears to assume the question: "is that a pantsuit". It will cut them off at the pass
4. Be over the top. If you're going...

MOMS IN LOVE: Valentine's Day Edition

—by My Mom, The Style Icon / Monday, February 15, 2010

Dana Dalrymple: "Here are my parents in 1964 soon after they were married. They were apparently successfully hunting jackrabbits, but in matching white jeans, white shoes, and plaid shirts. They're the most stylish hunters I think I've seen."

Reese Moore: "70's Camping Chic courtesy of Patsy's white Keds and thigh-baring white shorts and dad Terry's amazing green short shorts and sexy sock action. Further evidence that BOTH my parents are style icons."

Emily Yanez: "This is actually my Grandmother Marion Gilchrist standing with my Grandfather Grover Gilchrist not long after they started dating at the age of 15 or 16. I always felt like this was a secret glimpse into a part of my grandmother that I never knew. Sure, she smiled and was happy, but in this photo she looks confidant, but like she is in on a secret with my grandfather that no one else in the world kn...

Valentine Weekend Video - Part 1 of 2

—by The Year in Pictures / Monday, February 15, 2010

I've been saving this for Valentine's weekend. It's the final scene of "Cinema Paradiso" when Salvatore, the protagonist and childhood assistant of the projectionist Alfredo, screens the reel that Alfredo had left for him - and finds a veritable history of cinema in censored clips. Set to Ennio Morricone's romantic score, it's a bittersweet valentine to love and an unconditional valentine to cinema.

FYI - If you haven't seen the film, I would strongly recommend the extended Director's Cut, over the original version.

Eastenders

—by Wayne Tippetts Photography - London Street Fashion / Monday, February 15, 2010

Fashion Student Olesya is wearing a vintage coat find from Shepherds Bush market and it only cost £2.00. The dress was made form a vintage man’s shirt,  the shoes were a find - Olesya says they have a been through a few colour transformations… “they were originally Italian vintage, white linen shoes, but when I got them they had been painted orange, I then painted them black.”

“At the moment my favourite trend is to wear white socks, or stockings with dark shoes. My least favourite trend is Carvalli and over-glamorized clothes, - the type of clothes worn by Katie Perry - cheesy pinks that sort of thing”.

The Moving, Self-Powered Room

—by BLDGBLOG / Monday, February 15, 2010

During the New York City blackout of 1965, roughly "one thousand overseas passengers were affected," the New York Times reported at the time, and "many of them were put up in nearby hotels or motels."

A slightly different scenario unfolded at the city's airports, however:At Kennedy, American Airplanes rolled out all its planes, which are equipped with independent power systems, and loaded eight hundred stranded passengers. They were fed a meal and shown motion pictures until the lights came back. These self-powered moving rooms—airplanes become hotels become cinemas become emergency shelters, in a jet-setting transformational sequence like something out of the early visions of Archigram—revealed an unexpected flexibility to the infrastructure of global transport.

Next time, perha...
