Yayoi Kusama’s obsession with the depiction of infinite space has held a central focus within her artistic career. Fireflies on the Water (2002)—with its controlled environment of lights, mirrors, and pool of water—is one of the outstanding examples of these installations that permit the individual viewer to suspend one’s sense of self and accompany the artist on her ongoing journey of self-obliteration.
