Marc Jacobs closed New York fashion week last night with a giant sun which hung over the Lexington Avenue Armory, leaving a golden glow on the models, their looks (including mohair hotpants and fur coats), the concrete stage and the audience. The backdrop came courtesy of Stefan Beckman, a long-time collaborator of Jacobs, and it's radiant luminescence was a startling contrast to Jacobs' striking monochrome line-up last season.

Jacobs sun was inspired by Olafur Eliasson's spectacular installation at the Tate Modern, The Weather Project which had its audience basking in the strange light. Jacobs also referenced the saying "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" – music to AnOther's ears, with our latest issue featuring upcoming Return To Oz star Michelle Williams.

""Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun", Pablo Picasso once said."

The sun, is a popular symbol in art, perhaps chosen because of its multiple interpretations, that range from spiritual, authority, intellectual knowledge to birth, life and comfort. "Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun", Pablo Picasso once said. Here, AnOther presents its favourite sun-inspired artworks, from Van Gogh to Katie Paterson and Paul Fryer.
