A spirit of adventure swept through the BOSS menswear show on Tuesday evening. Showing at New York Fashion Week: Men’s in its first menswear show since 2008, the German house presented a nautically inspired Autumn/Winter 2017 collection, which fully equips today’s modern traveller for a life on the road – or, in extreme cases, the high seas.

Featuring heavy naval overcoats, fisherman-style smocks and fur-hooded parkas, cableknit jumpers, scarves and roll-necks, chunky rubber-soled leather boots and duffel bags, this wardrobe was designed for surviving the elements, whether on the streets or in the great outdoors. But beyond its tough exterior, at its heart the show was a masterclass in elegant, structured suiting – always a BOSS forte. Paired with lightweight performance parkas underneath, the look fused contemporary tailoring with hardcore function, and using a subdued palette of navy, olive green, burgundy and off white, it was an exercise in robust but disciplined masculinity.

As the models lined up for the finale, closer inspection revealed mini whistle and compass keyring trinkets, and sealed seams inside the garments. If the secret to any successful expedition is preparation and attention to detail, then BOSS is still a leader in the field.
