Introducing the charming man behind Loverboy, London's most hyperactive club night and fashion label

Describe a night at Loverboy in three words…
Colourful, cheeky, hedonistic.

What’s the most outrageous costume you’ve seen there?
My friend William’s self-made Victorian costume with ruffles and big hips padded with cushions.

What’s been one of Loverboy’s most memorable nights?
We did a film night, playing Lars Von Trier’s The Idiots. Half an hour before the end, Kevin the cabaret MC paused it and said, “Fuck this shit, we’re gonna do the Hokey Cokey instead!” We didn’t finish the film.

What does Loverboy bring to London’s nightlife that was missing?
There was a lull after Boombox and Ponystep, and everything had become normal. Bland. It was workwear at warehouse parties. Loverboy is a place for people to perform.

Where does the club night end and the fashion label begin?
For now, they are working as one, under ‘Charles Jeffrey Loverboy’. It will change into something else as I mature but I think it’s a healthy way to view being a designer in this time.

Who do you design for?
Myself. It’s a bit self-indulgent.

What’s the greatest influence on your style?
My friends. My Autumn/Winter 2016 collection was created by a group of them bringing clothes to my place and spending the week dressing each other up and taking photos.

What’s your favourite piece from the collection?
The skinny suits in burgundy, gold, red and purple; the palette was based on abstract paintings I did in the summer.

What song best describes you?
20th Century Boy by T. Rex.
