Emerging designer Rebecca Jeffs teamed up with Chris Rhodes and creative agency DJA to produce a new series of work for 1 Granary’s VOID

Just over a year ago, 1 Granary – the London-based magazine and showroom – launched its first ever initiative connecting emerging designers with established talent, including photographers, stylists and creative directors. Titled VOID, the project aimed to bolster the fledgeling careers of young individuals emerging from MA and BA courses, into an industry that is notoriously tricky to penetrate. As editor-in-chief of 1 Granary and founder of VOID Olya Kuryshchuk told AnOther in 2017: “I think in the beginning people thought the name came from all the ‘voids’ in the industry. But we didn’t think of it that way – it’s the opposite. We want to create a space that people can step into; a space where they can feel safe, where they can get lots of support and help.”

This month saw the second iteration of VOID, an exhibition showcasing a new set of collaborative work, staged over London Fashion Week Men’s. The talent included some designers who had already been a part of the project previously: Charlotte Knowles, for example, who teamed up with photographer Harley Weir and stylist Georgia Pendlebury; Chopova Lowena (the design duo partnered with Ben Kelway and Eliza Conlon) and Gabriele Skucas who worked with Jean Baptiste Talbourdet, Lolita Jacobs and Thurstan Redding.

Rebecca Jeffs, a new addition to the VOID programme who now lives and works in Paris after graduating from the Central Saint Martins Womenswear MA, was paired with photographer Chris Rhodes and Marina Francisco from DJA, the creative agency behind Prada’s branding and campaigns. “Olya approached me about it after I showed my MA collection last February,” the designer explains. “She then got in touch and said that DJA was interested in working with me on VOID, which was quite overwhelming really! I then met with Marina, who really understood my work after seeing my research book, and ultimately ended up pairing me with Chris.”

In an online exclusive, we run the entire series that Jeffs, Rhodes, stylist Danielle Van Camp and Francisco created together for 1 Granary’s VOID. “The shoot was based upon a theatre of actions revolving around the everyday objects that were re-appropriated within Rebecca’s collection,” says Rhodes. “It was interesting for me to work with someone whose designs function similarly to my photography. We both re-evaluate everyday objects and cast a new light on them – it was such a special collection to photograph.” Click through the gallery to see more.
