As mothers love to remind us: breakfast is the most important meal of the day; the fuel that kicks our fuzzy brains and sleepy bodies into action. Breakfasts differ delightfully not just from country to country – fish, tofu and miso soup in Japan; pretty fruit-embellished pastries in France – but also from household to household (some swear by eggs while others devotedly stick to porridge). This is something beautifully exploited by Instagrammer and breakfast devotee Michael Zee on his wonderful feed @SymmetryBreakfast. Everyday for just over a year, Zee has cooked (or occasionally bought) himself and his boyfriend Mark van Beek matching breakfasts, laid them out in perfect symmetry and posted them on his Instagram. Aside from their incredibly pleasing layout and chic use of cutlery and tabletops, what is particularly brilliant is the vast array of different foods the couple sample, each inventively presented by Zee – from Mexican omlettes in brass pans to Scandinavian crudites on a perfectly partitioned plate.
