Menswear A/W15: Matt Mulhall's Hair Favourites

Stylist for shows from Burberry to Berluti, longstanding Another Man contributor Matt Mulhall is a staple of the menswear collections. During a season that saw eclectic styles from Topman's coiffed “Bombay City Rollers” wrapped in 70s Afghan coats and Fendi's courdoroy-suited academics with sleek side partings to finger waves fringing the faces at Kolor, it was a prime moment to ask him what inspired five of our favourite styles, and how he created them.

Topman
"Topman was inspired by 70s icons and bands like the Bay City Rollers, and we wanted to continue developing that atmosphere through the hair. We also wanted to tie together all of the varying lengths of the models' hair and we found that having height at the crown both did that and gave it a 70s feeling. We achieved this by blow drying Bumble & Bumble Thickening Full Form Mousse into the hair and then loosely pulling it into shape with a round brush. Then, we lightly back-combed the crown and finished it with Bumble & Bumble Does It All Styling Spray."

Neil Barrett
"The look at Neil Barrett was inspired by the idea of 'purity,' and the brand wanted the guys to have clean, natural, non-fussy hair. A lot of the collection had been stripped back and featured natural colours, so a subtle look fit well. Very simply, we used a light Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hairspray on damp hair, and then diffused it dry for an air dried effect."

Fendi
"Fendi wanted a slightly more structured hairstyle, more controlled. There was a hint of the modern gentleman in the collection, so we created a twist on the traditional side parting. We did that by keeping the hair quite flat using Shu Uemura Mousse and then diffuse drying the hair without touching it with a brush or hands, therefore setting it quite flat. We finished it with Shu Uemura Wax."

Kolor
"Kolor wanted to keep hair flat, with a small wave movement at the front but maintaining a natural feeling; the clothes were very colourful and not too structured, so we wanted to carry that through the hair. Again, we used the setting technique of diffuse drying, but with lots of L’Oreal Tecni Art Mousse and then we put a small finger wave at the front. Finally, we dry brushed it into place."

Salvatore Ferragamo
"The inspiration for the Ferragamo was dreaming, so they wanted a very loose look, a kind of 'just woken up' feeling for the hair. We achieved that by using lots of Bumble & Bumble Thickening Hairspray, and setting the hair with lots of texture, curls and strands without a singular direction. Then, the look was finished with Bumble & Bumble CitySwept Finish Spray."
