Summary

For 2010 we expand our cultural gaze outside of London to bring you the cream of the crop of worldwide happenings this week. Resolutions of mind expansion are sure to be satisfied with these exciting and engaging events.

Born In The Street / Ne Dans La Rue at Fondation Cartier, Paris – Monday, January 4 to Sunday, January 10
Ne Dans La rue – Graffiti takes over the garden and front of the phenomenal Fondation Cartier, as well as its exhibition space. Using film, photography and painting, it documents the birth and evolution of graffiti as the art form that most commonly graces our cities. This week is your last chance to see it.

Kienholz: The Horengracht at The National Gallery, London – Monday, January 4 to Sunday, February 21
2009 saw Amsterdam’s Red Light District take a walk on the arty side with pop-up galleries appearing amongst working brothels as part of its Redlight Art project. Conversely, for 2010 American artist Nancy Kienholz has brought an artistic representation of Amsterdam’s Red Light District to the National Gallery. The infamous doorways and windows are recreated with a ghoulish and sinister view of the area’s inhabitants and visitors in a show which sheds a new light on a fascinating part of society.

Gisele Vienne’s Theatrical Adaptation of Jerk, at Performance Space 122, New York – Wednesday, January 6 to Sunday, January 17
Gisele Vienne’s startling reinterpretations of Dennis Cooper’s controversial novels have been received with astonishment and intrigue across Europe. The text is an imaginary reconstruction of the crimes perpetrated by Dean Coril in Texas in the Seventies and Vienne’s play draws on puppetry to bring the novel to disturbing light.

Vintage Paper Fair, San Francisco – Saturday, January 9 to Sunday, January 10
The Vintage Paper Fair is a large exhibition and sale featuring collectable antique paper items. Vintage postcards, advertisements and war propaganda are displayed here on such a large scale that even if you aren’t in the mood to buy, it’s worth going to see. The fair only visits San Francisco every four to five months and for those willing to splash out, the event promoter works on site offering appraisal of your chosen goods.

Ed Ruscha: 50 Years Of Painting, at The Hayward, London – Sunday, January 10
The first major UK retrospective of the work of Ed Ruscha at The Hayward has become a must-see and is leaving town at the end of this week! Works exhibited span Ruscha's entire career to include his printing, graphic design, cinema, and photography, demonstrating the range and development of one of America’s most influential living artists.
